Nuclear
fuel is
a core subject matter used to start and maintain a nuclear fission reaction in
nuclear power stations in order to generate heat. To sustain nuclear chain
reaction, it is the fuel used in nuclear reactor. These nuclear fuels are
fissile in nature and the most widely used fuels are plutonium-239 and
uranium-235, both of which are radioactive metals. The entire procedure that is
involved in attaining, refining and making use of this nuclear fuel together
forms a cycle called the nuclear fuel cycle. Nuclear power stations use these
nuclear fuels to generate heat in order to power turbines. When the nuclear
fuel goes through nuclear fission, the required heat is generated. It is not
mandatory that all nuclear fuels generate power, plutonium-238 and a few other
elements are use to create tiny amount of nuclear power by many types of atomic
batteries and by radioactive decay in radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
Nuclear fuels are said to have the most superior form of energy density as
compared to all other practical fuel sources. Presently, there have been
several researches carried out to determine whether thorium-232 can be used as
a nuclear fuel.

The
global nuclear fuels market is predicted to garner lucrative growth in the next
few years and will register at a substantial CAGR during the forecast period.
One of the key drivers for the future market growth of this industry is the increasing
awareness of the carbon emissions. The demand to lessen the carbon emission on
a global level will result in power generation market in the direction of fresh
and clean electricity generation technologies like nuclear power generation
along with reduced carbon emission footprint. In 2015, there was a
revolutionary deal announced by the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change that needed all parties to come to an agreement to implement
initiatives on lessened emissions and report amount of carbon emissions as
well. The result of which stated that the carbon which was emitted from the
electricity generation with the use of coal was 36 times more than that of
nuclear energy. The use of turbine-based power generation is promoted due to
several initiatives which encourage the use of low carbon or carbon-free
technologies. This as a result will propel the growth of nuclear fuels market
further. In 2016, EMEA was responsible for the highest shares in the market of
this industry and is predicted to continue to dominate the overall market for
the next few years. The reason for market dominance in this region is the
existence of countries which are relying on electricity generated from nuclear
energy and the reduction in the fossil fuel dependence.
